Lending a Hand

Last weekend at the Miss Keene Area/ Kearsarge Valley (a case where one pageant is held but two crowns are awarded to the top two scorers) I got to get a taste of what it is like being a director of a pageant. I helped with coordinating things before hand, preparing judges gift bags, choreographing opening number, and helping backstage. Now if you've been following me for a while, you know I was crowned Miss Keene Area in Feb. 2010 so it was nice to be able to help out my former director, Marion Murray who is a long-time volunteer of the scholarship program.

By the way, the show was fantastic. It was themed after the braodway show "The Wiz." Miss NH 2011, Regan Hartley sang a couple of times and was absolutely amazing. Seriously- One of the most gifted singers ever.

Congrats to the NEW Miss Kearsarge, (my good friend) Katrina Ulaky and Miss Keene Area, Krtistin Crossland (her first Miss America local crown.)

PGA Playoffs Stop in New England

I was so excited to cover the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Mass. on Labor Day. I got to talk to Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson, and the winner of this stop of the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs, Webb Simpson. (Unfortunately I didn't get to chat with one of my favorites- Adam Scott due to a throat illness.) It was incredible to be at this event, a sport that I play and have a lot of respect for. This was very different from the LPGA Futures tour stop in NH that I helped to organize two years ago, with tons more fans and crowd control. Many people were waiting to get autographs from the big names, for hours.
I was particularly impressed with Fowler, who not only signed dozens of hats and balls but seemed very down to earth in our chat. Check out a snippet of my interview with him....

Milan Lucic hosted his 2nd annual Rock N Jock charity softball game. He was joined by teammates Horton, Bergeron, Seidenberg, Thornton, Paille, Rask, as well as many former Bruins. The stands were packed and each time a Bruins player went up to bat, the crowd went nuts. It was nice to see so much support from fans all decked out in Bruins apparel. The event raised $10,000 for the Celebrities for Charity foundation.

Red Bull Cliff Diving & Sox Prospects

I have never seen anything like the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. These divers were coming from a 92 foot platform above the ocean doing tricks, turns and pulling out moves I have never seen before. Fan Pier was packed with spectators and boats, canoes packed into the harbor to catch the action. Fourteen competitors fought for six spots in the finals, where the top three were awarded cash prizes and points. Through the season, seven competitions take place around the world. The athlete with the greatest amount of points gets the title. This was the coolest...

Boston's Greatest Sports moment-There's plenty to chose from!
Obviously mine would be seeing the Bruins win the Stanley Cup this year. Timmy getting a shutout in game 7 on away ice (with a touch of dirty water) after Luongo's obnoxious comments was the best thing I've ever seen. His entire Stanley Cup finals performance was unbelievable, obviously- that's why he won the Conn Smythe! I never once doubted him this year. The whole team overcame adversities and made me as a fan so darn proud!

Lots of Miss NH events took place recently. As of now, 9 of the 28 local crowns have been awarded. (In the Miss America program, a contestant must win a 'local' pageant to be eligible to compete in her state pageant.) Miss NH does not take place until May, but this weekend there were two fundraisers to help raise some of the $80,000 plus given at the state competition.

Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game

It was a rainy day but the weather didn't stop these top college players from showing what they have at Fenway Park for the 49th annual CCBL All-Star Game.
I really enjoyed watching and chatting with these players because I have the utmost respect for college athletes and many of these players are very talented.
This year the East beat the West 4-1. James Ramsey (of Florida State) was named East MVP, while Konner Wade (of Arizona) was named West MVP.

For the first time ever, the Extreme Sailing Series made a stop in North America. It wasn't a coincidence that these came to Boston for 4th of July celebrations.
The special part about this sport is that a '5th man' can ride as a passenger on the boat. While the crew does it's thing, the rider clenches a netted area, hanging on for their life. It was amazing to watch!

I was crowned Miss Greater Derry 6-24-11, the 25th anniversary crown. I won $5,250 in scholarship! This was the first pageant of the 'pageant season' that I was eligible for. Now that I won a local crown I have months to prepare for Miss New Hampshire in May 2012. You must win a local title to be a competitor at Miss NH. This will be my fifth year competing but I know it's going to be the best because every year MGD always does VERY well at Miss NH. I'm excited to serve this tight-knit and supportive community. Once again, the Bruins dominated the Canucks in Game 6 of the 2011 Quest for the Cup.

Do you believe in 'hockey gods?' You might now! When Cam Neely (No. 8) was the honorary captain in Game 3, Bruins scored 8 goals. For Game 4, same things with Bobby Orr (No. 4)- 4 goals. Game 6, well that was Milt Schmidt's night... he was 15, so that was nearly impossible. But how wild?!

Last week we had an open rehearsal where all parents and directors were welcome to watch the action. Naturally these people know pageants well so nerves are flying around like crazy. Anyway, shout out to my directors Tina and Gary for being so supportive and encouraging of me experimenting with my new talent! This is truly a sport of it's own.

Sunday, April 3 was the Miss NH Outstanding Teen tea party where several local Miss titleholders attended and helped out at. So many little girls came all dressed up. The event was very successful and whoever made those pink frosted cupcakes with the crown sprinkles on top, thank you for those delicious calories. I loved every bite! :)

What a Woman!

This weekend, my directors Tina and Gary brought Lissa and I to meet with Abbie Rabine-Aristizabal. Abbie was Miss Massachusetts 2001, and the following year at Miss America, she was first runner-up! She now is a voice and piano teacher and mother of three adorable kids.
She's fierce! From the moment we walked in, you could tell she "still had it."

Our day started at the Manchester airport at 6am, we flew to Philly and drove to Abbie's house and studio in NJ. We had only a few hours to cover the A-Z's of pageantry before we had to be back at the airport to catch our flight home.

Abbie is very passionate about the Miss America program; she calls it "our sport." (Which is true, it's tough competition- only subjective.) She shared her inspirational stories, interview notes, eating suggestions and a lot more.

It was a pleasure to meet with someone who is successful, passionate, and a strong product of what the Miss America program provides.

Miss Winni and I attended a benefit for the Boy and Girls Club of Laconia. Our mission was to sell keys for $5; one would open a treasure chest that contained cash and a one night hotel stay. It was a really cool event, with a tropical theme. The committee that put it together did a great job planning, and they had a really neat slide show that had pictures of the club with a sign in every image that would spell out something.
You know, people say it's a small world, and it really is! While I was there I got talking with a woman who we think might have gone to school with my father and worked with him too! It's funny what you find when you take the time to hear people's backgrounds.
I had a great time, (REALLY loved the cupcakes they had), and I wish the club the best of luck with their future endeavors. I hope to put on a work shop soon for the young ladies.

In a little over a month it's MISS NEW HAMPSHIRE time! Of course, this is my fourth year competing, and I am contestant #4... that's good luck right? Well this year is the first time ever the public can VOTE for who they want to see as Miss NH. Starting April 1, anyone can vote online at missnh.org for their favorite contestant to be put in the top '12.' Two of the spots will be filled by voting, the other ten are the highest composite scorers. I have earned $30K, yes 30, in scholarship which allows me to go to school and someday be speaking to you through your television. Your vote could help me big time. This week I started my internship at NESN; I'm working on the NESN Daily show. I won't be on air but I'm learning all the operational parts of production. I already met Randy Scott, and I can't wait to meet Jade McCarthy next week. Hopefully I'll get the chance to do a couple of interviews if they need someone last minute. I'm very excited to work with the NESN team for the semester and learn all of the tricks of the trade.

End of Jan. Happenings

On Jan. 16, at the Whittemore Center, the annual WERZ bridal show took place. Along with a few other NH titleholders, I modeled several bridal gowns from "125 Bridal." I got my hair and make-up done and spent 2 hours strutting my stuff. I guess you can call that living the dream right?

The 8th annual Easter Seals Wine Spectacular was held on Jan. 27 at the Center of NH in Manchester. I didn't try any wine but I did get to sample some delicious food and deserts from restaurants all over NH. I had chocolate covered strawberries, a cider donut, a feta cheese chicken dish, and a mini cupcake with raspberry filling. Needless to say I absolutely loved this event! I was supposed to be selling raffle tickets to those in attendance (there were thousands of people there), but I got a little side tracked meeting with current sponsors and chatting away with perhaps potential sponsors!

Executive Chef and Owner of Bedford Village Inn

I gave up my title as Miss Keene Area on Sunday, Jan. 31. I made a beautiful slideshow that showcased photos of myself and my sister crown Miss Kearsarge throughout the years, beginning in 2007. The night before we were told the emcee had to cancel due to illness, so Lauren and I were to take the honors. We had barely had time to look at the script because we were teaching the opening number, managing the teen/ pre-teen interviews, trying to get the slideshow to work, and set-up, but we got through it with only a few stumbles. I know that people always remember bad emcees so even though it was hard for us to be on our "A- game" with such last minute notice, we tried to make it as fun as possible for everyone. We cracked some jokes and were just ourselves (which sometimes can be a little dangerous because we are silly girls.) Anyway, I crowned Regan Hartley as the 2011 Miss Keene Area and Lauren crowned Sam Massahos as Miss Kearsarge Valley 2011. They are both very impressive singers and I wish them luck at Miss NH.

2. Boy am I a happy girl now that I have met the P.R. guy for Hockey East- Pete Souris. He has been so helpful as I try to expand my reporting beyond UNH. I will be putting together all sorts of videos for the league (which if you didn't know holds the 2 teams who have won the last 3 national championships). 3.Miss America was this past weekend!!! I watched it with the family. I was so happy to see so many former Miss America's for the 90th annual pageant. What started as a mere swimsuit competition has now turned into the leading source of scholarship for young women. A lot of people were/are up in arms that 17-year-old Teresa Scanlan won the anniversary crown but she deserves it completely. She carried herself so well! Her piano talent was certainly one of the best. Her response to the on-stage question- the final elimination was the only question NOT answered in what I call 'the pageant perfect way.' Her question was about wiki-leaks- national security vs. freedom of speech and press. She said how she felt but gave it some ground, which is awesome. I admire how ambitious she is, she wants to become a judge maybe even president. She speaks very well and seems very up-to-date on politics and events. I think she will be a strong and daring girl- I love it!

Part of competing for Miss NH is the fund raising process. Whenever we can, we are asked to help at the food stand at Gillette Stadium during games and events. There's also Bingo games all over the state the benefit both local programs and the Miss NH Scholarship Program which awards around $80,000 every year just at the April state competition.
We are asked to get advertisements from businesses and good luck wishes from friends and family to put in the 300 page program book. This not only showcases a company, but the support means a lot to all of us and it is a great public relations idea.
Ad coasts are as follows:
Full Page- 7" x 10" is $250
Half Page 7" x 4" is $150 (vertical or horizontal)
Quarter Page 3 11/16" x 4 15/16" $75
Business Card size 3 11/16" x 2 3/8" $40

Ads must be camera ready with not less than 600 x 600 dpi in JPEG, GIF, BPM, Word, or Publisher formats.

One of My Fav-or-ite things....

The week of Christmas I was able to volunteer at one of my favorite charitable events- the Salvation Army toy drive. This used to take place in the Salvation Army building, where my whole family loved to help. This year it was held in the Radisson Inn conference center. When I arrived, I was blown away by the amount of volunteers there were, it seemed there were more than any year prior. I got my name tag, and got in line to be matched with the first family. A parent from the family is mailed a post card prior to the event with the children's names and ages, which they bring with them to pick out toys and goodies. All of the toys and clothes are separated by age and depending on what and how much gets donated, the parents are allowed to choose x amount of items from each section for each of their children.
This year, each child opened up sox, underwear, hats and mittens, a few stocking stuffers, books and of course toys thanks to community and local businesses.
There were some pretty cool things in there! I saw Hannah Montana playsets, lots of Milton-Bradley board games including a special Twilight game.
One volunteer that I spoke with said she loves helping out at this event because it means so much more than writing a check to a charity. I thought that was very sweet of her. Guess how we started talking? She was wearing a 'Roots' sweatshirt, and I recognized it was from Canada!

On Saturday Dec. 4 I took a trip up to Laconia for a couple of appearances as Miss Weirs Beach. First I danced at a holiday recital that was in the mall. I danced to my Miss NH 2010 talent, an arabian mix. Meg Lyman was there too, she did a tap dance, and was great as always.
The next event I went to was a very memorable one. I attended this Christmas Village. It was amazing; people were lined up outside in the feeezing cold for this! A bunch of volunteers turn a recreation center into a winter wonderland. As you entered the downstairs, children would give their names for name tags but little did they know that my self and some other secret santa helpers were taking the names down in a letter from Santa to pick up at the end. As people walked downstairs through a maze of activities they would play games for prizes, get their face painted all by volunteers and people dressed up as elves in character. A group of about 20 would be gathered to enter what they thought was the gymnasium upstairs but it was a 25 foot high Christmas tree decorated, with a sleigh ride with life sized reindeer pulling a sleigh to ride. There was also the Grinch, snowmen, and other Xmas characters to visit with in the cafe. Inside Santa's house was the elves workshop where you made an ornament, next you could get a picture with Santa and he was giving out REALLY cool toys, the next room were ladies knitting giving out candy and finally the kids picked up their letters from Santa telling them to behave!! Soooo coool!

My First Ever NFL Football Game

I can't believe I aspire to be a sports journalist and yet I had never been to see the Pats play. All that changed when randomly I was asked to go to the Pats vs. Colts Game on Sunday night. The temperature was at the freezing point but the front row seats couldn't have been any better! The militia men, Pat Patriot, the Cheerleaders, the friction of Brady vs.Manning, the game itself was amazing! Shout out to Katie and Fred Manley for the tickets! I definitely will always remember my first Pats game with you guys!! :)

I had a guest come stay with me this weekend. I showed her around the UNH campus and we got to do a photo shoot with the most precious photographing couple ever, Peggy and Chris Arbeene. If anyone is looking to get family photos or pageant head shots, check them out. They are so sweet and really love what they do.

I also did a shoot with Rick Bouthiette. We experimented with zoom and flash from within the image. We got some great photos, I absolutely love working with him; his wedding photos are amazing!!!

Congrats to Michelle Mayer. She is a senior at Londonderry HS and won her first local title, Miss Monadnock Region. The Barker's (Rachel and Deb) are some of the kindest people in the 'pageant world.' I can remember I when I won my first crown and Rachel was Miss New Hampshire and really made me feel so special. That warmth is what makes me think of her as my favorite Miss New Hampshire. Good luck to Michelle in her first year, watch out for her amazing singing in May.

Congrats to Katrina Ulaky who was crowned this weekend as Miss Rockingham County. She has a great dance and is very good with public speaking.
The beloved Paula Moore, who has served as the director for this pageant for years is passing along her duties to former contestant Justine Barker and her mother Joy. Paula has such a big, giving heart with great intentions. She came along with Lauren Gorgol and I to a parade this summer. Spending the day with her was awesome because she is someone who really loves to help other people to success.

Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountain Annual Conference

As you may or may not already know, I am very involved with Girl Scouts. Because of the economy, this almost century old organization is facing some real issues that were discussed at this meeting. Questions like How to get sponsorships? or Are all the Girl Scout owned properties are monetarily feasible? or How does an organization keep retention as girls get older? came up. GSGWM are trying to approach these tasks with a new eye by forming committees and sub-committees to examine all these factors that go into this organization as it is the oldest organization for girls. I worked on my multimedia class project; speaking with older and younger Girl Scouts. The national council came out with a great campaign with some really nice videos that you have GOT to check out. I was very impressed!!

I am very proud to report that we raised over $1650 for Children's Miracle Network with the help of some great volunteers. Shout outs to Erica Millett, Lissa Silk, Alyssa McLaughlin, Rebecca Rendina (and those really sweet EMT's), Sarah Mousseau, Kristen Ruggieri (and Holly too ;), MC Archer, and Outstanding Teen Megan Cooley.
It was quite the project but I was very happy that we were able to get 90 runners for our first year. Thanks so much everyone and to our kind sponsors!!!

Some other exciting news......I started a newscast at UNH. Although the school has a journalism program and there's a 'video club' there is no regular newscast. Since I already write for TNH, and we are trying to emphasize the web content, I figured this was the place to start. Every time new editions of TNH come out, (Mondays and Thursdays) a new newscast I titled "Headlines" will be put on the net highlighting the stories from the paper. It amazes me that this wasn't established sooner but I am confident that as we grow with this idea and our resources become more expansive, it will be a hit!

If you haven't been bombarded by every media in the U.S. then I will tell you how important today's midterm elections are. This is one of, if not the most fierce race between Democrats, Republicans and of course Independents and Libertarians are thrown into the mix. This election could determine the outcome of the Health care for our country, it could determine funding for research, it also may have effects on energy renewal and off/on shore drilling. The Road Race!!!

I have experienced how to direct a road race, check it off the bucket list. What a task (actually hundreds of tasks) To prepare for the Childrens Miracle 5K Road Race: Caring a Trail of Hope I spent nearly 300 hours obtaining sponsors, getting prizes, putting the website together, going to events to pass out flyers and info, contacting community groups, fraternities and clubs, putting together a proposal for the town, attending meetings, dealing with complications choosing, designing and ordering T-shirts and Trophies, getting registrations and money together. It took a lot of work and I have to attribute the success largely to my parents who helped me with things like mapping the route. My brother hung in there after being given 30943 things to do, and Brett Carriere gets a big shout out too for helping with sponsors and logistics. Caitlin McGlinchey sent out press releases and dealt with media while her mother put together the bake sale and worked on food and bev. Also Lauren Gorgol and her mother Holly had the huge task of running the registration table, good work girls!
We had 90 participants, and I will post the money we raised for CMN soon.

Thanks all for running and helping, it made it very worth it!

Fun Spot's Annual Halloween Party

This had to have been my favorite appearance to date. As Miss Weirs Beach I met my sister titleholder for 2011, Lissa Silk as we passed out candy and tokens to all who dressed in costume to Fun Spot and then judged a costume contest. I had so much fun, people had the most creative home made costumes and some people really got into character with their outfits.
My favorite costumes were a infant as a Mummy, which won first place in that age group.
There was someone dressed as the dinosaur from Rugrats, SO cool!!
I also saw a couple dressed as titanic and even included the iceberg, and someone with a homemade double mint gum box!

My very first Keene Pumpkin Fest

This year on the 20th anniversary of the Keene Pumpkin Fest, which they say will be the last year, I finally attended the Keene Pumpkin Festival. I gathered my family members and we all carved pumpkins before we went. I carved a pirate, even though it doesn't look to intimidating. While I was there I met a bunch of photographers who come from all over to the festival just to get shots of the foliage and the pumpkins. I was on the local TV station as guest 'Miss Keene Area,' and I ate lots of guilty pleasure food including a locally grown apple that started healthy until it was covered in hot dipping caramel, and then drenched in it when I asked for extra.
I was stunned by all the creative pumpkins, there was even two sets of pumpkins with proposals carved into them, impressive!!!

Diabetes Walk, Manchester NH

My family walked in the Diabetes Walk to make awareness and raise funds for research to find cures. My brothers childhood friend and soccer teammate passed away a year ago due to the disease. I was at the walk to support the families and talk to them about our road race. I met several children with Type 1 diabetes and heard their stories of hope.

Chili Fest- A Celver way to help Charity

I Loooooooooove Chili Fest.
I went with a bunch of people in my family to check it out and spread the word about the road race.
When you arrive, you pay $5 and you get tickets to try a few types of Chili at all the different stations. I went through my tickets but realized there were soo many more to try so I bought a whole lot more tickets. I must have tried 15 Chili samples. Some spicy, some meaty, some with lots of vegetables, but one had a chocolate base...not my favorite.
Not only did this event taste so good, but it fundraised for two charities in NH: Families in Transition and the YMCA of Greater Manchester

I have to start going to these things more.

Warner Parade

I haven't blogged in forever. People must be so curious about what's been going on! haha!
Oct. 10 was the Warner Fall Festival. Lauren Gorgol, Miss Kearsarge and I went to visit with folks and were in the Parade. There were all sorts of crafts and vendors. I tried a hot sauce that the vendor said was 'Mild;' not so much! We went on a couple of ride, where I learned a valuable lesson....hang onto the crown! There was A giant slide where we had to hold onto our crowns and a fun house that had a gusty fan that literally sent the crown flying off.

In the parade we saw an older man and his niece who have a float every year. This year they dressed as the Flinstones, sooo cool!!!

I am so happy that Megan Lyman will be with me and the other girls at Miss NH this year. She is a genuinely kind and loving person who is incredibly talented and inspirational. She won the Miss Deerfield Fair pageant, and what's funny is that she crowned me Miss Weirs Beach and I was Miss DFF in 2008.

CHaD Golf Tournament

I was asked by Wayne Sheehan, a police chief in NH to be on his foursome team in the CHaD Seacoast Classic Golf Tournament. I was nervous at first because the only 18 hole game I played was without a cart and I thought it was torturous.
I told Wayne in an instant I would be there, I couldn't pass up the opportunity.
The day was overcast, I drove up to Cochecho, a private course, I was one of four females in the tournament and was one of the youngest and certainly the least experienced. I had my used clubs, a Spaulding set. My bag doesn't have a kick stand, and I was surrounded by top of the line Ping and Taylor Made clubs, bags and outfits- talk about embarassing. I had no idea what to do when I got there so I wandered aimlessly. I found Wayne and met the other two teammates.
Obviously since I always run into some sort of bizarre embarrassment I encountered some at the course. First, as I was arranging my clubs in my bag I pulled out my driver, another was attached somehow onto it and the club I didn't intend to grasp came up and out of the bag, landing on my nose with a bang.How did that manage to happen?
Later, as the rain came pouring on us I took a swing on the fairway and my club flew out of my hands. Of course I pretended like nothing happened and hoped that''s what other people thought too. Nope, almost an entire junior hockey team helping out saw.
Regardless, I had such an awesome time, I didn't want to leave. A ~~good~~ great time for a ~~good~~ great cause.
We played best ball and broke even. We ended with a 70, and last I checked we were dead last.
I need to get on the course again with that great company. The horrible thing about winter approaching is that golf is coming to an end.
(Oh and I met former Bruins player Ken Hodge, just living the dream.)

A piece of the Paper

I had been spending countless hours every week putting together stories that come to life for the school paper, The New Hampshire. Last year I worked with this without really knowing much about it. I was editing on iMovie and had never used a Mac before. The biggest struggle I've encountered is renting the equipment, and uploading it properly. Since the school paper does not have a camera I am forced to rent from the Multimedia department with a 3 day limit of renting and sometimes when I return the camera it's reformatted and I am not able to mesh the movies together. I am learning new things with every movie and will be learning how to work with Final Cut Pro very soon. I'm currently taking a Multimedia class which hopefully will expand my knowledge of the subject in new directions to make me stand-out when I look for jobs once I graduate.

Dancing and Cooking

This past weekend I participated in 2 noteworthy activities. The first was on Saturday Sept. 11; Lissa Silk, my sister titleholder was helping with a Zumba class that benefited breast cancer research. I went to support her, the cause and boogy for a couple of hours. I have to say Lissa was a very great Zumba instructor. There were two others that took turns instructing but Lissa was energetic and mixed the moves in a way that everyone could follow..Nice work girl! :)
The other activity I helped with (explaining the photo above) was the Cook-Off to benefit CMN hosted by Miss NH Krystal Muccioli. This was my first time making something in a crock-pot so I went simple with a blueberry crumble cake. It took 3 hours to cook, JEEEEEZ! But at the end of the day the event made over $1000.
Both events were very successful and raised money and awareness for both causes. Gotta love it :)

A Busy Weekend

Lissa Silk and I were featured in the Gilford Parade with the theme of 'Harvest.'

Miss Manchester was also this weekend. 13 girls competed for the title, Elysha Greenberg won. Congrats girl! (I want her height, and her wardrobe! ;)

Wow! That is what I have to say about the incredibly talented people who participated in the Timberman Ironman. I volunteered at the information booth which was quite the learning experience. It was there that I was approached with questions like "Is there someone to take off my wetsuit before I get on my bike?" and "Where does the transition take place?" or "What if my swim cap color does not match my age group for my wave time?" None of these questions I had a positive answer for. I learned that a triathlon starts with the 1.2 swim, then immediately 'transitions' into the 54 mile bike ride and then ends with a 13.1 road race. (By the way, the answer to those questions were "Yes there is someone to take off wetsuits," "Ellacoya State Park," "I still have no idea why that would be")

The people registered were all different ages, body types, heights etc. I was shocked when I saw 70 year-olds taking the course. It was inspirational and exciting at the same time.

The winners of the triathlon were Andy Potts and Chrissie Wellington who ended at 4:10:11, a phenomenal finish! I got the chance to get a photo with Wellington....

Caitlin McGlinchey will be a contestant in the Miss NH 2011 competition! She recently won the local title of Miss Lakes Region! I was not able to see the big 'W' because I was feeling ill all day but I'm so happy for her! Caitlin is co-directing the road race with me; she's working on the PR aspect of things.

The Miss America Scholarship Program partnered with the Children's Miracle Network a few years ago. Miss America made CMN the national platform and required that all contestants participating in the pageants fundraise for the nationally known organization.

Since I have been a contestant for 4 years in the Miss NH pageant, I can tell you how hectic it can get preparing for pageant week, school work, jobs, and working with our own platforms that we chose to dedicate our spare moments to. In the past the Miss NH volunteers have worked very hard to fundraise enough so contestants do not have to worry about this part of competing, which was incredibly helpful and really appreciated. Recently with the economic down fall this has been a struggle.

My friend Caitlin and I decided to step it up. We're co-directing a 5K road race. All the money raised will be distributed to the accounts of the 27 Miss NH contestants which is donated to the Children's Miracle Network.

We're really excited for it but it's a heck of a job we took on. Between website issues, lack of willing sponsors and our hectic schedules it's already been a challenge. But we are going to make this race the sweetest thing in Candia.

So come out October 24, the Sunday before Halloween. Wear a costume- run or walk. Get freaky in the fall for a good cause! You won't want to miss this...it's going to be sweet ;)

Miss NH Cruise and More

What a weekend I've had! It was stuffed to the top with pageant related events (and so will be my monday with the golf tournament.)
Friday night I attended the local pageant Miss Londonderry. Adria Farr was crowned the winner; congrats to the twirler! :)
Saturday my sister crown Miss Kearsarge (Lauren Gorgol) and I (as Miss Keene) attended the New London Hospital Days. We visited with local vendors, met many adorable, took pictures with al pacas, helped with the New London Rotary club food stand, and were in the parade.
We were also interviewed by the local radio station 92.3 out of Hanover NH. It was a lot of fun to be there. The vendors had such creative trinkets and things. I got a new necklace! Gorgeous!
To our surprise we met a former Miss NH too, Shannon Heather Hastings. I saw her two daughters, one with a crown and pink feathers and we started chatting and discovered that the former Miss NH (1994) was visiting her parents for the weekend. Sunday was the Miss NH Cruise to benefit the Scholarship Program. I took my boyfriend who had never been on a boat before!! :)

A rented set of Clubs

I went golfing for my first time while I was in Canada...
It was my first time playing on a course. I went with three boys, all relatively unexperienced golfers. Our Tee Time was at 10:40, we left the course around 3pm. I was told that this is the average amount of time for a rookie on an 18-hole without a cart. I don't have my own set of clubs yet so I had to rent a 'short men's set' from the club house. I'd like to blame the fact that I had no aces, birdies and was far over par on every hole to the fact that I had a horrible set of clubs that were not intended for use by women.
My bag of clubs had a giant "RENTAL" plastered down the side. I was already embarrassed about that but I made my way to the first Hole 1, as the next people to conquor the hole after my group waited and watched. I swung the first time with all my force from the 320 yard tee...I practically did a circle around myself and my club never came in contact with the ball. Then again, set up my stance, regripped- swing and a miss! I was under pressure now and could feel my armpit sweat coming through my baby pink polo. Then after a couple of tips from my small audience I hit the ball! about 50 yards! haha Well obviously I need practice and I really do need to get a set of clubs with some give that aren't beat up. 18-Holes for a first timer was a bit much without a cart but now I can say I did it and I can't wait to get back out there again! :)

Female Golfers Bring the Heat!

The International at Concord was this weekend, I'm so happy I randomly decided to be a part of the event. The 3 day tournament took place at the Beaver Meadow public golf course in Concord, NH. I ran the main gate ticket sales. There were an overwhelming number of locals who came to volunteer their time caddying, keeping score, being a marshall, announcing, helping with parking and much more. The event itself was unreal!! From where the admissions table was set up I could see the girls practicing on the driving range which was sweet. Their swings were incredible, beautiful actually. What was neat about the tournament was that the LPGA had former pros teaching 10 minute free clinics. Of course I went to get some since I am starting to take up golf. I got lessons from a UNH alum for putting and chipping!! Once we were done comparing the differences of her time and my time at UNH we went to work. She showed me the proper way to grip, how to swing, and taught me some drills. So many small details can make or break your par. Speaking of breaking....some of the girls from the reality show 'Big Break' were there. I met Sara Brown who was not only talented and gorgeous but also as sweet as can be. Her father is her caddy and was an absolute riot going on and on about her to everyone. I also met Mo Martin who is one of the top 10 money earners for the tournaments on this 2010 tour.

New England Camera Club Council Annual Conference

Two words-So fun! This took place at the campus of U Mass Amherst.

I was slightly nervous to go to this weekend long event. I haven't had much modeling experience and I knew there would be over 1500 photographers at the conference. The committee really hyped it up and there was a lot of information and things to keep in mind. There were 8 locations with different sets/scenes. At each one we had to wear a different outfit for. Between shoots we had 45 minutes to get back to the dressing room, change outfits, hair and make-up, then it was off to the next place. The volunteers from the committee were incredibly welcoming and helpful. I was so intrigued by the passion each photographer I met had for their art.

The models were friendly, the mix of girls was perfect. My roommates felt like my long lost sisters. They were fun and we got along very well!

My favorite shoot was at the Conference Center where I wore a black leotard only and wrapped a golden ribbon around my body. With the wind, the image was unique and very beautiful.

I've got to do it again next year!

Gunstock Goodness!

The Miss Winnipesaukee and Weirs Beach pageant took place last night at the Gunstock resort in Gilford NH.
This was my third time competing in this pageant, and it must have been a charm! I was crowned Miss Weirs Beach 2010 and Lissa Silk is Miss Winnipesaukee 2010!
This pageant is certainly unique from the rest, the directors- Tina and Gary work hard to fundraise to make the day fun, relaxing and special. We started the day at Funspot, where theWinnipesaukee pageant was held for some years. We got over 100 tokens to play games (Caitlin, Becky and I pooled our tickets to get 2 stuffed animals to donate to the ball.) and then we went across the street to the Go-karts! I got the fast yellow car and was very pleased with the speed on that kart! :)
When we arrived at Gunstock, Boston Catering served one of the best meals I've had in a while. Both dinner and Lunch were nutritious and delicious!
I won $4000 for winning a crown, $150 for winning interview, and $50 for winning evening wear. I also got great directors for the year, the opportunity to compete for Miss NH2011 and the honor of being part of a pageant that has been around since 1925!

I spent this Independence Day at a parade in Andover, NH as Miss Keene Area. I was dressed in all white, and my sister crown-Lauren Gorgol (Miss Kearsarge Valley) was dressed in blue. We rode in a sweet ride, our director's blue mustang! Marion drove as we threw candy to the locals. When we arrived for line-up we got a notice reminding anyone giving away candy to really toss it out so that kids wouldn't try to come too close to the moving cars to snag the sweets. We thought it was pretty silly when we read it until we realized we needed to throw like Wakefield to get the candy anywhere because it was so light. Our candy choice? Twizzlers! It was good that we had those because if people got hit by the candy, it didn't hurt them! :) It was a hott one, and we were pretty sweaty, but I think we made it look good. Happy Fourth of July! Celebrate the greatness!

O'Reilly to NH?...... ohhhhh yeah!

Front page of the Union Leader today announced Bill O'Reilly coming to speak at the Nackey S. Loeb School First Amendment Awards in October. ( I can't link the article because the link can only be seen by e- subscribers only) It's very exciting to have a nationally known journalist come to support a school that serves the community of those eager to write and learn from those local word workers who are so happy to have the opportunity to teach.
O'Reilly is an enormously successful TV and radio personality. He has the nation's highest-rated cable news show, 'The O'Reilly Factor.' He's written several popular books, and is liked by millions....also dislike by probably the same amount.
I personally enjoy watching the news. Local, national, anything that is informative about events (except maybe C-SPAN). Even though I find satisfaction from being up-to-date with the headlines of the day I understand that many don't find it as fulfilling. I have taken turns watching different news channels, at different times, with different hosts, formatted in diverse ways...Good Morning America, Larry King, the local-WMUR, Fox 25 out of Boston, but I must admit that O'Reilly has a witty way of addressing topics that's captivating, informative while also being entertaining. It's refreshing and colorful. If you are a liberal who wants nothing to do with anything on a FOX channel, you have to admit that Billy boy has a pretty fun show and certainly won't try to pound you down with a hammer with his republican views like Glenn Beck or Limbaugh.

I have never been particularly fond about conservative views, let alone seriously conservative media but I have recently been spending time with people who are well, I'll call them Fox Freaks (those who are 100% hooked on every word and story on FOX News). I decided to give the TV segments and radio shows a try. I found Rush and Glenn WAY too much to handle. I found Sean Hannity to be incredible... a bit intense at times but nonetheless awesome. Then I became hooked on O'Reilly. The closest to the split road of politics and a lot of fun to watch.
I have taken classes at the Nackey Loebb School which offers several different classes to anyone interested in learning more about reporting or media by reporters from the Union Leader, WMUR, the Concord Monitor etc. I took news writing, script writing, and creative writing. I loved each one, and learned so much and must admit it was here that my interest in writing for the public turned into a dream and now a reality.
Therefore I am thrilled one of the most influential conservative journalist of our time is going to be honoring those who have worked hard to protect and utilized the freedom of speech at the Nackey S. Loebb School First Amendment Awards on Oct. 22.

The International at Concord: an LPGA Developmental tour stop

I am interning with the International at Concord, hosted by Beaver Meadow Golf Course in our capital city. The tour is one of 17 stops in the U.S. featuring 144 young women golfers from 31 countries competing to qualify for a spot on the LPGA 2011 Tour. It's awesome that NH is hosting an event that brings so many young hopeful athletes to the state! I am the Account Manager, working to gain sponsorships for the event. Although calling businesses and working to gain sponsors is sometimes difficult with the state of the economy I find that it's a tremendous learning experience. I have been to several business meetings and attend events with the tournament directors. I love meeting so many people that are passionate about golf and helping this tournament. I have surprised myself and found that I am very organized in this setting. It's awesome to be able to work with a tour that is proof that women are able to be successful athletes. I can't wait to meet the golfers; maybe one will become the next Jane Blalock!
